Hello,

I was installing Oracle 10.2.0.1 on RHEL4 following the installation guide. At some point it's recommended to configure the oracle user's environment. I made a "slight" mistake where they ask to configure the display if we're not installing on the local system Sad ... I did enter
$DISPLAY=beretta:0.0; export DISPLAY
Beretta is my pc's name, but it is NOT networked, and I am installing ON it. I totaly missed that instruction.

I thought maybe it's gonna be ok,and when I started the installation of the database itself, just after I passed the first checks, I got the error, "can't open the display beretta:0.0".

I followed the troubleshooting techniques described on the appendix G regarding that error message, but I couldn't fix the problem. When I entered the
unset DISPLAY
command and tried to install oracle again, the new error message was that: "the DISPLAY is not set"

My laptop is not networked, and I am installing the database locally. Can someone help me? Is it necessary in my case to set the display? What am I doing wrong? What did I miss?

Thanks in advance.

Can you even resolve beretta? My guess is the hostname isn't in the host file.

I checked the /etc/hosts file and I there was an entry for Beretta, like the following:

127.0.0.1 Beretta localhost.localdomain localhost

After I set the display again, I tried and execute ./runInstaller and I got the following:

Can't connect to X11 window server using 'beretta:0.0'
. I got the same error using localhost:0.0., and that's where my install stops.

A ping on Beretta gives me a positive reply.

How can I fix that?

What do you get if you simply run:

export DISPLAY=:0

Didn't try that. But as I was trying to install using text mode, someone tipped me to launch the installation using the graphical mode, KDE or GNOME. I have GNOME installed. Am gonna give it a try and see how it goes.

Thanks.

Hello,

It worked that way! Seems as if I was using the wrong environment. Thanks again for assisting me.
