I have taken over support of an Oracle Instance and no one sems to know what sys's password is. My questins are:

1. Is it safe to change syss password using the "alter user" command?

2. Where are the Oracle passwords stored? (e.g.) If I need to recover the old sys passwrd, is there a password file I can back up and copy back in for recovery?

Any help is appreciated!

Bill

Hi Bill,

yes ist safe to change it with alter user. There's no ssupported way instead. Hav you tried with the dummy Password to come into this (sys - changeoninstall , system - manager)
The passwords are stored in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/orapwd<ORACLESID>. but they're coded.
