Debugging in reports - help!

I am fairly unfamiliar with this.
I am wanting to find the value of variables in a particular program unit at various points - how do I do it?

In forms I would use message('hello there' || variable);

I am on Reports 6i

srw.message('00001','variable is'||' '||to_char(:my_var);
