Matrix Report - Vertical Expansion of Across Group fields [message #88856]

I am trying to make a matrix report where the across group fields are varchar2(40). I can give a maximum of 10 character lengths of width for each column.
While I am able to get the vertical expansion for the DOWN group fields and the matrix group fields(cells), I am not able to get the vertical expansion of the Across group fields even though the field property shows Vertical elasticity as "expand".
It is truncating and the report is pasting the rest in some other page.
If anyone knows the solution/why this is happening, please let me know.
