Wondering if there is anyone using VMS ..... I have a hard time finding anyone else who is still running off this platform. We need to patch our Oracle 8.1.7.0 to 8.1.7.4 and everyone is in a panic ..... can it be THAT difficult?

Hi,

Your not entirely alone, but you're in a small minority.

The patch process for VMS is very similar to any other platform in methodology.

Essentially, you perform the following steps.

Dowload the patch release from oracle and store on your VMS machine

Read the patch set release notes which are always well written and a complement to the Oracle patch release teams.

Follow the release notes to the letter, run through on a test machine before you go to production so that you are familiar with what you will be doing.

In general you will be doing the following work:

Unzip and restore the backupset to your temporary location

Then backup your databases

And backup your oracle home

The set def to your Oracle Home

Install the 8174 patch release into the 8170 Oracle Home.

Startup the databases and apply the catalog scripts.

Don't forget the 8174 for VMS patch release is old and well tested so you can be sure a lot of DBA's have upgraded a lot of Oracle homes and databases before you.

If you're in the UK, I can provide a consultancy service for this work.

Michael Hartley.

There are http://www.openvms.org and, for dba's, http://dba.openvms.org that covers all databases on OpenVMS - incluidng Oracle and (of course) RdB.
More HP related are the OpenVMS forums at http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/familyhome.do?familyId=288
